The Big Push
Ben Cummings
Are you ready for the Big Push? The Big Push is an annual habit my clients partake in. Typically we get off focus during the holidays. The Big Push is about getting re-focused like a laser beam the first 30 days of the New Year. It’s about starting your year with a financial bang. The Big Push is one of the most important things you can do to focus the practice
It’s about momentum
Have you ever gone skiing? The first time I went was a scary experience. You feel uncomfortable with the new skill. To a degree you feel helpless and hope you just don’t fall. As luck would have it, my first time on the ski slopes was with two of my brothers – both avid sportsmen, both born skiers. They decided to take me up one of the most challenging hills, to prank me! Well, I’m not sure exactly how I made it down the hill in one piece. All I remember was that I let momentum do all the work.
In the world of private practice, it seems the moment the doctor takes his eye off the practice we see it stagnate or decline. This happens frequently to practices during the latter part of December. In working with doctors over the last 8 years, I’ve observed that it takes three months for them to recover from their December! You see, doctors start relaxing their focus in December. It becomes easier and easier… and easier to set things aside. It often takes 1/3rd of the New Year for them to get back on focus and “recover” from the bad habits that cemented during the holidays.
It’s about momentum. When the doctor is focused on practice goals and gets in the habit of hitting them, he/she is more likely to continue the upward trajectory. This is why I focus my clients attention back onto practice building the first 30 days of the New Year. Such downward momentum carries them into a successful year!
The Big Push
How can you make sure this problem doesn’t happen to you? We put all our clients through an annual ritual that I call “The Big Push.” The Big Push is about FORCING yourself to put a major emphasis on practice building in the first month of the New Year.
If I can get doctors to do the Big Push the first 30 days of the New Year, I can almost guarantee they will have a successful year. It seems their effectiveness (or lack of it) during the first 30 days of the New Year is a measure of their commitment for the year to come.
Are you ready for the Big Push? If you did $30k in collections in December, are you prepared to do whatever it takes to do $32,000 to $35,000 in collections in January? Why not kick start the New Year with a major focus towards practice success and prosperity?
Doing so will…
- Build your self-esteem
- Let staff know you’re “back to business”
- Help pay off some of those holiday debts!
